Aye, ye guessed it. I’m Scottish!
My family can be traced as far back as most records in Scotland began, although, it has to be said, I’m not related to royalty, there are no Lords or Ladies or great historical figures. Instead there are hardworking, hard living people, the sort of people who kept Scotland running. Sure they would have been involved in wars throughout the centuries but sometimes that isn’t the important thing.
People sometimes expect to find these great historical figures in their past, but of course, there were far more “ordinary” people than there were “extraordinary” people. That doesn’t make them any less fascinating, and a lot of them were themselves ‘far from ordinary!’
My own family hails from the South West of Scotland, in a part known as Galloway. Galloway was fiercely independent in Scotland’s early history, defying the Scots to the north and the English to the south. It bred a people who were feared in battle, their leaders, the infamous “Lords of Galloway” made even Kings nervous!
But it is with Scotland as a whole that we deal with here. A proud nation filled with rich history and spectacular beauty. Scotland’s sons and daughters have spread out over the entire globe and it is not surprising that many descendants are now wanting to find out who their Scottish Ancestors were.
As I said, sometimes it’s not the rich and the famous who make a land, it’s the people who live on and work it, the people who carry on the traditions, songs and language of their forbears.
These people, however humble, have as much of a right to be remembered in Scotland’s Past as as any king!
This, however, is not a tourist site, nor is it a site for Scotland’s history - you will find your part of Scotland’s history when you discover your tree!
But I would not be doing my duty as a Scot if I did not encourage people to take more of an interest in this great land.
And so this is why I’ve included some links here to take you sites of interest involving Scotland:
